1978 Jazz Bass

Here is a rare and great sounding vintage 4 string bass that would make a nice addition to any bass collection. Handbuilt in Fullerton, CA (1978-1980) this Fender Jazz Bass is a perfect example of the times. The Serial Number (S856457) dates the bass to 1978, the Neck (023011394) and 2 of the CTS pots (1377949 and 1377949) dates to 1979 and the pups (191380 and 211680) dates to 1980. According to Jay Black's book "The Fender Bass", this was not unusual for this time period. The 3rd pot appears to be a modern CTS with no date code. The bass features a highly resonant Ash body with a traditional Black high gloss finish, 3 bolt-on Maple neck and a Rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. This bass is in excellent condition and comes with a Fender hardshell case.

Bright, articulate, defined, jazzy, rockin' and cool! The Jazz Bass was designed by Leo Fender who understood very well the need to adapt to the changing times and who nearly single-handedly would shape popular music for the next half a century. Introduced in 1960 as the "Deluxe Model", the Jazz Bass was marketed as a stable mate to the Jazzmaster guitar. It was renamed the Jazz Bass because Fender felt that its redesigned neck - narrower and more rounded than that of the Precision Bass, would appeal more to jazz musicians. However, the Jazz Bass is distinct from the Precision Bass in that its tone is brighter and richer in the midrange with less emphasis on the fundamental harmonic. Because of this, many bass players who want to be more "forward" in the mix, like Noel Redding of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Verdine White of Earth, Wind, & Fire, Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone, John Entwistle of the Who and many others prefer the Jazz Bass. With a bright funky sound and more high end than the Precision Bass, the Jazz Bass is ideal for slap playing as well as finger-style playing.
